Health Care Is Missing Piece to Early Retirement

Dear Bruce: My goal is to retire by age 55 (two years away). I'm single with no children and have a well-paying job. I have always been a saver, and my brokers tell me I can retire whenever I want to. My mortgage has long been paid off, and my only monthly expenses are utilities.

My biggest concern is health care. I've never had to worry about it before, since my employer provided it. Where's the best place to start to get options for buying it on my own? Can you think of anything I should be looking for or stay away from?

I'm currently very healthy and take one prescription medication, but I know situations can change quickly as you age. I know I need to make sure my current primary care physician is in the plan I choose, as well as prescription drugs. …
