Hayden Angler on All-State List

Article excerpt

A local angler is officially among fishing's top up-and-comers after a successful 2015 season.

Hayden High School freshman Thomas Heinen was named to the 2016 Bassmaster All-State Team this past week, alongside fellow Kansan Connor Nimrod, of De Soto.

Heinen, a member of the Capital City High School Bass Club, earned four wins, including a first-place finish in the Kansas State Youth Finals Championship in October at Milford Reservoir, and is an active member of Fishing's Future.

"The All-State program not only measures an angler's fishing accomplishments, but also his or her success in studies and extracurricular activities," said Hank Weldon, senior manager of the B.A.S.S. High School program, in a release. "The students selected are very accomplished on and off the water. They are all very deserving of this award, and we're proud to have them represent this year's All-State teams."

Nimrod, who tallied a first-place finish at the Kansas high school state qualifier at Pomona, also competed in July at the Bassmaster High School National Championship at Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tenn.

Both anglers now are eligible for the Bassmaster High School All- American Team, all 12 members of which will compete in a one-day fishing tournament at BASSfest on Lake Texoma in Oklahoma.

"Being a candidate for the final 12 All-American list is a huge honor, and I would love the opportunity to fish the All-American tournament at Texoma Lake in June," Heinen said. "I am honored to be selected on this list, but I could not have done it without all of the guys in the Flint Hills Bass Club that have donated their time helping me learn as much about the sport as possible. I have been fortunate to have great teammates and boat captains. I couldn't have done it without all of their help."

If either Heinen or Nimrod makes the list, they will have an opportunity to be teammates with Elite Series anglers at the tournament and will be honored on the main BASSfest stage at the weigh-in. All 12 members of the All-American team also will be profiled in Bassmaster Magazine, read monthly by 4. …
