Topeka Jazz Concert Series Finale Offers Best of KC Jazz ; Jazz: Finale $25 for Nonsubscribers

The Topeka Jazz Concert Series will end its 47th annual season Sunday with the second of the series' showcases of the best of Kansas City jazz.

Steve Waugh, president of the Topeka Jazz Workshop Inc., which began the series in 1969, said in planning this season he wanted to expose season subscribers to "more of the great KC artists."

"We often see them only when they come in as backup rhythm or sidemen for a national artist or as part of a larger KC big band," Waugh said.

So Waugh asked Todd Wilkinson and Stan Kessler to each put together a sextet under their leadership, with three guidelines:

- They choose the artists.

- They don't duplicate the performers.

- "Plan a memorable concert that would have our members and guests leaving the concert 'with their hair on fire' and wanting more. …
