A family-favorite Charleston event will end its 18-year run next week.

The final Pachyderm Picnic will be Wednesday at the Charleston Town Center mall, the business announced on its Facebook page. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey brings its touring circus to the capital city next week for four days of performances. The circus' parent company, Feld Entertainment, announced last year that it would retire its elephants by 2018 and relocate them to the company's Center for Elephant Conservation, in central Florida, but shortly after the first of the year, it was reported that the circus instead would end all elephant acts this month.

Town Center Marketing Director Lisa McCracken had told the Gazette-Mail in January that the feeding, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., would be held one last time while the circus is in town. …
