Sarah Davis Buss' letter ("Salaries keep Mt. Lebanon schools competitive," July 23) demands several clarifications.

First, the salary increases referred to in Ernie Meinbresse's letter ("Mt. Lebanon spending spree") in South on July 16 concern administrators, not teachers. Teacher salary schedules are determined by contract. The 3.7 percent-4.7 percent administrative increases are well beyond [the increase in] the cost of living and can best be described as excessive.

If Ms. Buss deems that higher salary levels ensure the most qualified administrators or principals, why were both middle school principals denied or given lower-percentage increases? Incidentally, both resigned to pursue other interests.

Ms. Buss also states that the compensation levels don't bother her, and she is happy to see that the district can offer compensation that will enable us to remain competitive. …
