Ashton's Play-Off Bid Will Go Down to the Wire

ASHTON UNITED face a nervy final day in the Evo-Stik Premier as the play-off race will go down to the wire.

The Robins could have sealed a top-five finish last night and did their bit by winning 3-0 at home to Halesowen.

But sixth-placed Workington kept the pressure on by claiming a 4- 1 victory at home to Matlock.

The Cumbrians therefore remain a point behind Ashton, who went level with Stourbridge, although the Midlands outfit have a game in hand at Frickley tomorrow night.

Martin Pilkington beat the Halesowen keeper to the ball to roll in an 18th-minute opener for Ashton before captain Jay Gorton doubled their lead on 35 minutes.

Chris Baguley then fired in a long-range strike with 10 minutes left to ensure the Robins ended a run of three straight defeats at Hurst Cross. …
