PARK RIDGE - Nick DiMeo is healthy.

Finally.

In the world of Park Ridge athletics - not to mention the DiMeo household - that's the stuff of headlines. It may be even more newsworthy than the senior right fielder's red-hot start at the plate.

"Oh, I'm definitely injury prone," DiMeo said with a big smile Tuesday morning while getting ready to work at a youth baseball clinic at Park Ridge High School. "Everyone in my family keeps saying they're going to put me in a bubble to keep me safe."

You can trace DiMeo's athletic career through hospital charts more than box scores.

He developed bone chips in his right elbow -- his throwing elbow - - as a fourth-grader playing ice hockey.

"I'm just not a lucky kid," DiMeo said.

He played baseball as a freshman, seeing a little varsity time before he needed elbow surgery to remove those bone chips. As a sophomore, he broke his left wrist playing football.

"Like I said, the worst luck," DiMeo said with another smile.

He didn't play baseball as a sophomore and junior because of injuries. He then tore his MCL and injured his patellar tendon, and couldn't play football or wrestle this school year.

"He's a like MASH unit," Park Ridge athletic director Chris Brown said. "It was a big loss not having him on the offensive line in football."

With one season left in his high school career, DiMeo decided to give baseball one more try. The results, so far, have been nothing short of remarkable.

DiMeo has been the Owls' most effective hitter through their first eight games. He's batting .684 (13-for-19) as Park Ridge's No. 3 hitter, with two home runs, two doubles, a triple and 12 RBI.

"I'm having fun and hitting the ball," DiMeo said. "I don't know how, but I am."

DiMeo had three hits and three RBI against Hawthorne Christian in his first game back.

He's had at least one hit in seven of the eight games, including two home runs in a 12-6 win over Waldwick. …
