Latest Upgrade Makes Crossover a Contender

Article excerpt

THIS week's test car proved to be a real surprise as SsangYong have greatly improved their Korando SUV/crossover with a new engine plus a restyled/upgraded interior and exterior. Facelifted for 2016, the 2.2SE we got to try out feels well built with quality brushed steel interior finishes and switchgear, despite being the entry level model. A new, 2.2-litre diesel engine replaces the previous 2- litre version and is designed to comply with the latest Euro 6 regulations. The car has nearly 20 per cent more power, improved fuel economy (up from 47mpg to over 53.3mpg combined) and reduced CO2 emissions. The new engine is also quite lusty, although a little noisy until warmed up, giving a respectable 0-62 figure of under 10 seconds with 175bhp on tap and a top speed of 115mph. Our car was a six-speed 2WD SE manual, but there is also a new six cog auto offered and motorway cruising was good, although the steering feels a little heavy at higher speeds. The range moves up through EX to ELX with 4x4 versions available on all and the ELX is 4x4 only. Designed by the Italian styling house Giugiaro, the new Korando, launched late last year, also offers equipment enhancements. Externally there are new clear glass direction indicators, a new piano black radiator grille with additional chrome detailing on the ELX, and new-look 16'& 17'alloy wheels, as well as 18'diamond cut alloy wheels on the top of the range model. There are further improvements iid i h d di f i inside with upgraded infotainment systems on all models. The SE gets RDS audio with an MP3 player, Bluetooth, iPod / iPhone connectiv- vity, while the EX features a 7" high-resolution touch screen with audio streaming from smart devices and a rear view camera. The ELX also gets a TomTom navigation system and all feature a USB memory slot, aux and HDMI port. The Korando's nearest rivals are probably the likes of Vauxhall's Mokka and Hyundai's ix35, both of which it undercuts on price by over a grand and beats on power, economy and equipment. Our smart red basic model starts at Pounds 15,995 and for that you get cruise control, heated front windscreen, puddle lamps, electric heated door mirrors, air con, chrome twin exhaust, LED daytime running lights, smart 16" alloy wheels, tyre pressure monitoring, a stereo with Bluetooth and MP3 compatibility and hill start assist. …
