CATAPULTS were in almost every boy's pocket during grandad's childood, says Jeremy, and yours will need little encouragement or instructions to make a simple catapult from a forked stick cut from the hedgerow.

However, just to refresh a possibly ageing memory, a few reminders: Find a forked stick in the rough shape of a traditional catapult (carve or shape it if it's not perfect).

Remove the bark and, if grandchildren will allow, leave it to season for a month or two. Sand the catapult for comfort and attach fairly strong elastic (available online via Amazon, eBay or catapult suppliers or cut your own from an old inner tube) Tying the elastic to the prongs is the easy way but makes the trajectory unpredictable.
