Two WPIAL football championships will be played at Joe Walton Stadium on the Robert Morris campus for the first time next season, while the basketball championships will return to Petersen Events Center.

That was the biggest news from a WPIAL board of directors meeting Tuesday, when the league's administration decided on championship sites for the next school year.

The Class 1A and 2A football championships will be played at Robert Morris as a doubleheader Nov. 25 or 26. Next season is the first in Pennsylvania with six classifications in football, basketball, baseball and softball. The other four WPIAL football championships will be played Nov. 18 at Heinz Field.

North Allegheny High School and Geneva College also put in bids for the 1A and 2A football championships. The WPIAL uses Highmark Stadium on the South Side for soccer championships, but Highmark did not bid on the football title games.

"The main rationale went to the fact that it's a Division I college stadium," WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley said of the reason Robert Morris was chosen. …
