With the Pennsylvania presidential primary coming up Tuesday, I wish to present my fellow Democrats with a cautionary tale. In the April 20 Post-Gazette associate editor Dan Simpson urges a vote for Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton ("Vote Tuesday in Pa."). He said, "That [voting for Clinton] would require me to dump my principles, however, in favor of the contentious argument that the Clinton machine will do better in the fall against the Republicans than Bernie's young legion of voters."

In the 2000 election of Bush v. Gore, there were also a group of high-minded individuals who would not "dump their principles" and vote for Al Gore rather than Ralph Nader in the general election. George W. Bush won the state of Florida by 543 votes, thus winning the election. …
