SOUTHAMPTON U-21 2 UNITED U-21S 1 PHIL Jones' exclusion from the Under-21 squad last week suggested he might make his long-awaited return to the seniors but he was back with the juniors again in their 2-1 defeat at Southampton last night, where his plight at Manchester United continued.

Jones, who has made six Premier League starts this season, was lining up for the Under-21s for the third time in the last month and was left standing by Southampton's prolific 20-year-old Sam Gallagher in the build-up to the hosts' winner.

Gallagher was desperately pulled back by Jones on the byline and, from the free-kick, Sam Johnstone punched feebly against Paddy McNair, who could only watch as the ball floated into his own net.

Jones, 24, was withdrawn just shy of the 80-minute mark but, having been overlooked for the 18-man squads in last week's wins over Crystal Palace and Everton, it would represent a shock if he returns to action against Premier League leaders Leicester on Sunday. …
