Vowing to "fight to the bitter end," Peters school Director Karen Scharf voted Monday to appeal the state education secretary's rejection of former high school principal Thomas J. Hajzus' demotion.

The vote was 6-2, with Mark Buzzatto and William Furedy dissenting. James O'Kelly was absent.

About 15 members of a standing-room-only crowd spoke on both sides of the issue.

Priscilla Argentine called for the resignation of Superintendent Diane Kirk, while Paul Homer, president of the Peters Federation of Teachers, supported appealing the secretary's decision.

Hajzus was reassigned in May 2002 to a new position as director of special programs and projects at the same $92,000 salary. He has maintained the action was punishment for supporting four challengers to incumbent school board members in 2001. …
