Zach Haney Files to Run for Jonathan Schumm's Topeka City Council Seat in District 4

Attracting and retaining millennials is the number one problem facing Topeka, says City Council candidate and young entrepreneur Zach Haney.

He recommends addressing that by improving the city's accessibility, affordability, cultural attractions, and entrepreneurship and technology.

Haney shared that assessment in an application he filed Monday seeking appointment to southeast Topeka's District 4 City Council seat formerly held by Jonathan Schumm.

Haney, 20, of 3550 S.E. 23rd Terr., became the first candidate to file for the seat.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. May 9. Topeka governing body members plan May 10 to schedule public job interviews with the candidates.

A 2014 graduate of Shawnee Heights High School, Haney has been owner the past four years of a business he started, Carnival Guy Events. …
