Ex-Hackensack Star's Trial Date Set

A judge on Monday set a July 12 trial date for Ausar Walcott, a former NFL player and Hackensack High School football star accused of badly injuring a man with a punch outside a Passaic nightclub nearly three years ago.

Walcott had already been scheduled for a trial this year in Superior Court in Paterson, but it was rescheduled while his defense attorney and Passaic County prosecutors tried to negotiate a plea deal.

Walcott's attorney, Miles Feinstein, said his client has rejected all plea offers and is ready to go to trial. The last offer from prosecutors called for a five-year prison term for Walcott in return for a guilty plea to a charge of aggravated assault.

Police said Walcott punched 24-year-old Derrick Jones of New York City outside the Palace Gentlemen's Club in Passaic on June 23, 2013. Jones suffered brain injury from the blow and was treated for months at a hospital and later at a rehab center, police said. …
