A RARE baby monkey critically endangered in the wild has been born at Chester Zoo.

The Sulawesi crested macaques became the attraction's latest addition when mum Lisa gave birth last Sunday.

And keepers have released the first pictures of the week-old monkey, which has not yet been sexed or named.

Sulawesi crested macaques are one of the world's most endangered primates with fewer than 5,000 are left on their native habitat, the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia.

They are listed as critically endangered because their habitat is disappearing due to illegal logging.

They are also targets for poachers and are over-hunted as they are considered a local delicacy in their homeland. As a result, their wild numbers are believed to have plummeted by around 80 per cent in the last 30 years.

The arrival means the zoo now has a group of 15 Sulawesi crested macaques. …
