Smoke, Squatters, but No Major Fire at Downtown High-Rise

Emergency crews responding to a five-alarm fire in a Downtown high-rise Monday afternoon found only a man burning items in a barrel, Pittsburgh public safety officials said.

No injuries were reported in the incident at a vacant, nine-story building in the 600 block of Fort Duquesne Boulevard.

Numerous emergency crews converged on the building about 3 p.m. for a report of smoke in the structure and quickly shut down Fort Duquesne Boulevard between Sixth and Seventh streets.

City public safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler said the blaze was called in as a three-alarm fire and grew to five alarms because of the size of the building. But no large fire was found.

Firefighters entered the building and immediately began searching for the source of the smoke. Once they got to the fourth floor, the firefighters found a man burning insulation and wires in a metal barrel. …
