RIVERDALE -- Responding to numerous 911 calls about a man walking in and out of traffic in the northbound lanes of Route 287, Sgt. Greg Bogert ended up saving the man from leaping off a highway overpass, authorities said Tuesday.

"When I first got the call at about 11:30 Monday morning, it was about a man walking back and forth, looking at the edge of the bridge and jumping in front of vehicles," said Bogert, an 18-year veteran of the Riverdale police force.

"I could kind of tell he was trying to commit suicide," Bogert said. "I didn't want to spook him, so I cracked the door to my car open and started to get out slowly."

Bogert said he tried talking to the man, telling him, "Don't do it, don't do it."

"But he took off toward the bridge," Bogert said, referring to the overpass at the Hamburg Turnpike exit, Exit 53 from the northbound lanes of the highway, "and I took off after him. …
