PNC Customer Worries about Disappearing Branches Bank Holds Annual Shareholders Meeting

As more customers bank electronically, PNC Bank has been downsizing its branch network by closing branches and reformatting offices into scaled-down versions that replace teller windows with advanced-function ATMs.

But on Tuesday, one shareholder reminded Pittsburgh's biggest bank that there are plenty of PNC customers who prefer to bank the old-fashioned way.

"A lot of seniors like me don't buy into that," the Squirrel Hill resident said of the migration to electronic banking during PNC's annual shareholders meeting Tuesday. "We don't need speed or to worry about the cloud."

Instead of using a machine, she said she preferred to bank face-to-face.

"I completely agree," PNC CEO William Demchak replied, noting that his wife also preferred to visit a branch instead of banking via smartphone. …
