Tor Sehnert was excited to be a starter for the Peters Township baseball team last year as a sophomore, but Sehnert wasn't happy about something lacking in his game.


But Sehnert flipped the power switch to "on" this year, and he is tearing up opposing pitchers.

Sehnert entered last week as the WPIAL leader in home runs with six in 10 games. A 6-foot, 185-pound outfielder, he hit only one last year. Sehnert had a slugging percentage just over 1.000. He has turned into one of the biggest impact players in the WPIAL.

"I wouldn't say I'm a much different player than last year," said Sehnert. "I think I'm just playing more relaxed. I think I have a better idea of what I want to do.

"I always hit some home runs in the past, but last year I was kind of shut out. I did make some adjustments to my swing and that's affected my ability to hit the long ball a little more, too."

It's not as if Sehnert has never displayed talent before. He verbally committed to Coastal Carolina before this season. Coastal Carolina has a strong program, making 13 NCAA tournament appearances under coach Gary Gilmore in the past 21 years. The Chanticleers have had 14 players drafted in the top 10 rounds over the past eight years.

"A number of schools liked him," said Peters Township coach Joe Maitze, "and they really liked everything about him."

Especially the power.

Easy on the arm

You could call Montour's Trent Vietmeier one of the top junior pitchers in the country. He made the Perfect Game (scouting service) preseason underclass All-America team. Vietmeier already is committed to Louisiana State University.

But despite his lofty reputation, Montour's coach is making sure Vietmeier's right arm isn't overworked. That coach also happens to be Vietmeier's father.

Trent Vietmeier has pitched in only three games so far. He had pitched only 7?innings before working 5? innings against South Fayette Wednesday. He is now 2-0 with a 1.58 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 13? …
