St. Louis Regional Freightway Gets Official Launch

The St. Louis Regional Freightway, the region's proposed freight district that previously had gone by the names of America's Gateway District and The Regional Freight District, formally launched Wednesday.

The freight district was created as a public-private partnership to capitalize on the region's freight transportation network, and was established in response to recommendations in a 2013 regional freight study. It falls under the umbrella of Bi-State Development.

Officials outlined on Wednesday a framework for turning the region into a freight hub. Those plans include pushing for millions of dollars of infrastructure projects such as replacing the 126- year-old Merchants railroad bridge over the Mississippi River for $222 million.

It also called for big changes to Interstate 270, including widening the road to six lanes from four between Illinois Route 111 and Lilac Avenue, estimated to cost between $350 million and $400 million, and replacing its bridge over the Mississippi with a six- lane span for between $160 million and $175 million. …
