School Board Sets Q-and-A Session about Possible Teacher Furloughs Meeting Scheduled for Tuesday Night

Shaler Area School District will hold a question-and-answer session from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the middle school auditorium for residents to ask questions about possible teacher furloughs.

"Having a strong community involves all stakeholders taking part in the process," superintendent Sean Aiken told those attending the April 20 school board meeting.

After hundreds of students and parents turned out April 13 for a board committee meeting to urge the district to reconsider the possible furlough of an estimated 30 teachers, about 100 people attended the April 20 meeting.

Mr. Aiken told those at the voting meeting that although administrators and the board are considering furloughing some teachers, they also are considering other options, such as retirement incentives, leaves of absence and part-time employment. …
