Topeka Motorist Booked on Involuntary Manslaughter Charge ; Manslaughter: Man Arrested Had Multiple Outstanding Warrants

A Topeka motorist authorities said was involved in a recent fatal traffic accident was booked Thursday morning into the Shawnee County Jail on an outstanding Shawnee County warrant charging him with crimes that included involuntary manslaughter while under the influence.

Jail records identified the inmate as David Arthur James, 37, of 3769 S.E. Truman.

Topeka police said James was the driver in an accident early April 9 that caused the death of Melissa C. Kendall, 43, of Topeka.

Police said they were unable to locate any crashed vehicle after they were called about 2:40 a.m. that day to the 100 block of S.E. 46th Court on a report residents had heard a speeding vehicle and a crashing sound.

Police said they returned to the scene about an hour later in response to reports that a man with blood on his face was banging on doors of homes, then found James and located the crashed vehicle -- with Kendall inside -- in thick brush. …
