St. Louis University Professor Killed in I-44 Crash

ST. LOUIS * A St. Louis University professor was killed in a crash Wednesday morning on Interstate 44 in St. Louis.

Donald Patten, 48, was involved in a crash just before 8:30 a.m. at the Vandeventer Avenue exit from westbound I-44, according to police. He stopped to check on damage, then got back in his vehicle, a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo. It was then struck from behind by another driver in a 1966 Ford F-150.

The pickup then struck another man who was standing near the stopped vehicles, critically injuring him. That man, Patten and the pickup driver were all taken to hospitals. Patten was pronounced dead. The condition of the pickup driver was unavailable, but police said he was stable.

Patten was an assistant professor in the department of theological studies at St. Louis University.

"Donny was energetic, innovative in the classroom, and deeply committed to his students," department chair Peter Martens said in an email. …
