Dwight-Englewood's request to move up and compete with the large schools in the Bergen County tennis tournament was rejected by the tournament directors.

Coach Joe Iwanski said his bid was denied Monday at the seeding meeting. The Bulldogs again will play in the small schools portion of the event, which begins today.

Dwight-Englewood, the reigning Record Team of the Year and the No. 1-ranked squad in the most recent Top 20, had hoped to compete against Bergen's other top competition, such as Tenafly, Northern Highlands and Don Bosco.

"There wasn't even any debate," said Iwanski, who admittedly "stormed out" of the meeting. "For whatever reason, people seem to be entrenched that they're not going to let this happen. It seems like it would be a better tournament for everyone."

NV/Old Tappan athletic director Tom Kaechele, the tennis liaison for the Bergen County Coaches Association, said the tournament is following BCCA and NJSIAA guidelines by dividing schools by their enrollment. …
