Leafs Will Get No. 1 Pick in the Draft

The Maple Leafs, Jets and Blue Jackets all were winners in Saturday night's NHL Draft lottery.

Meanwhile, it was the status quo for the Devils as they retained the 11th overall selection with the bouncing pingpong balls not helping them move up in draft position. The Devils, who finished out of the playoffs for the fourth straight season with a 38-36-8 record, had a 3 percent chance of landing the top overall pick.

The NHL-worst Maple Leafs had a 20 percent chance of retaining the top pick. The Jets took the biggest jump in the lottery, moving from sixth to second while the Blue Jackets moved from fourth to third.

In past seasons, the draft lottery only determined the first overall pick but that was changed to the top three for this year.

The Oilers, who won the Connor McDavid sweepstakes in 2015 and also picked first overall in 2010 and 2012, slipped from second to fourth. …
