1864 Andrew Carnegie, at 29, entered the iron-producing business by purchasing a sixth interest in the Iron City Forge Company for $8,925. Other shareholders included Andrew Kloman and Henry Phipps.

1938 The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ray Sprigle was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his expose of Justice Hugo Black's affiliation with Ku Klux Klan.

1945 The Soviet Union announced the fall of Berlin, and the Allies reported the surrender of German troops in Italy.

1946 Violence erupted during a foiled escape attempt at the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in San Francisco Bay; the "Battle of Alcatraz" claimed the lives of three inmates and two correctional officers before it was put down two days later.
