Wildfire Women's Football Team First Home Game Saturday

The West Virginia Wildfire, a nonprofit, women's semi- professional football team, will be playing games this season at Little Creek Park in South Charleston. The first home game of the season starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 7. General admission will be $5, with kids 5 and under admitted free. The team will play the Southern Indiana Storm.

Team owner and coach Ralph Whittington said the West Virginia Wildfire was founded in 2010. The team was winless until 2012, but then won back-to-back national championships in the "Eights Division. The team competes in the United States Women's Football League.

"In 2014, we played in our third championship game in a row but lost by a last-minute touchdown, Whittington said.

Most of the women on the team are from the Charleston and surrounding areas, with a few from Beckley and Morgantown.

"We have an active roster of about 24 players, which is the best we have had, he said. …
