Dea: Deadly Fentanyl Surging in Allegheny County

The Drug Enforcement Administration this week issued an intelligence report indicating that the rate of fatal overdoses in Allegheny County last year doubled the national average and sounding a warning on the surge of deadly fentanyl in the Pittsburgh area.

The report, based largely on data provided by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office, places the county's overdose death rate at 32.75 per 100,000 people, vs. a state rate of 21.9 and a national rate of 16.15. The county has had a 73 percent increase in fatal overdoses since 2010, and had a 28 percent jump from 2014, according to the DEA.

The DEA found that "overdose deaths in Allegheny County with the presence of fentanyl increased more than 1,200 percent between 2013 and 2015. …
