TRENTON - The New Jersey Education Association joined parents outside the Department of Education on Wednesday to call for the state to drop the use of PARCC tests as a graduation requirement.

The state Board of Education is considering a plan to require students to pass the state exams in English 10 and Algebra I to be able to graduate, starting with the class of 2021. Opponents say students should not have to take a test to graduate, or that the test should not be PARCC, which some consider to be confusing or "age inappropriate." Others say the test is too new to use for graduation.

The teachers' union and members of Save Our Schools New Jersey noted that the majority did not pass PARCC last spring, the first year the test was given statewide. …
