Hackensack Picks Officer to Supervise Department

HACKENSACK -- Capt. Francesco Aquila has been named the new officer-in-charge of the Police Department, City Manager David Troast announced Tuesday.

Aquila, who has served in the department for 18 years, is taking over the post from Lt. James Prise. The appointment was made April 29, but announced at a City Council meeting Tuesday night. As officer-in-charge, Aquila will command day-to-day operations of the department, with the assistance of a second top officer and several captain-level division heads.

With civilian Police Director Michael Mordaga stepping down on May 16, Aquila will report directly to Troast and the city's Director of Personnel Simeon Cumberbatch, a retired Hoboken police captain.

Capt. Patrick Coffey, who has served in the department for 16 years, will be executive officer, a sort of second-in-command to Aquila, Troast said. Coffey will also remain in his position as supervisor of the department's investigative services branch.

The city recently restructured the department, adding two captain positions and promoting several captains, lieutenants and sergeants, including Aquila and Coffey, who were provisionally made captains at a March council meeting. …
