UPPER SADDLE RIVER -- A Toms River woman faces fraud and identity theft charges for allegedly stealing an elderly person's personal identity and using it to buy a $50,000 car and insurance policy.

Police Chief Patrick Rotella said in a news release that Dana Wagner, 47, is "suspected of perpetrating a multilayered scam" last August that began when she left her job at a New York car dealership.

There, she stole the identifying information of an elderly customer, according to Rotella.

Wagner then got a job at a New Jersey car dealership and used the stolen information to buy a $50,000 car and insurance policy in the victim's name, police said.

Then, police said, Wagner -- pretending to be a manager of a local car dealership -- persuaded a second person to open a car detailing company to prep and clean Wagner's vehicles. …
