Ringing the Changes as Fire Repairs Start at Hall ; HISTORIC BUILDING'S BELL TOWER REMOVED IN FIRST STAGE OF RESTORATION FOLLOWING HUGE BLAZE

WYTHENSHAWE Hall's iconic bell tower has been removed as work to re-build the fire-struck building gets underway.

A huge blaze ripped through the 16th century hall in the early hours of March 15.

Flames were seen coming out of the roof, and engulfed the base of the historic bell tower which at one point was in fear of collapse.

This week, the tower was lifted into the air by a crane and removed to make way for a temporary roof structure so work can get underway to restore the hall.

Scaffolding now surrounds the building which was left severely damaged by the blaze.

Images show most of the timberframed roof beams had been reduced to charcoal, with some sections of the roof collapsing completely to the floors below.

The Friends of Wythenshawe Hall described the destruction as their 'worst nightmare' and the group's vice-chair Paul Selby branded it a huge blow to the local community. …
