LABOUR remain in overall control of Bury council, but the party's vote collapsed in Prestwich.

Senior Labour councillors blamed Ken Livingstone, saying the comments which sparked the anti-Semitism row had caused 'grotesque offence' to voters in the area.

Paddy Heneghan, Labour's cabinet member for children, family and culture, lost Holyrood to Liberal Democrat Steve Wright and David Silbiger took Sedgley for the Conservatives, albeit by just 60 votes from Labour's Andrea Simpson after a recount.

Labour's Jane Black held the third Prestwich ward of St Mary's, by just 19 votes over the Lib Dems and also after a recount.

Sedgley's Labour councillor Alan Quinn said the party had lost two 'hard-working and proud' councillors because of a 'backlash against the Labour Party'.
