LaBOUR have held a steely grip on their Wigan stronghold - but there was a surprise advance for the Conservatives too.

While Labour gained one seat overall, the Tories managed to take two in Standish and Orrell.

It means the Conservatives have bolstered their place as the official opposition with leader James Grundy retaining Lowton East.

Terry Haliwell of Wigan West was one of six Labour cabinet members up for re-election, all of whom emerged victorious.

He said: "We've got here through sheer hard work, graft and team work with good Labour policies year in, year out."

He said they had invested in communities, apprenticeships, business and senior citizens.

Meanwhile, Standish was lost by Gareth Fairhurst, of the Standish Independents, a party made up of him and his parents. …
