LIB Dem leader Tim Farron hailed John Leech's 'triumph' as he made a return to Manchester council.

Mr Leech was MP for Withington for 10 years, after being elected in 2005 with the biggest swing in the country.

He was first elected to Manchester council in 1998 when he represented the same area - and secured victory in style at this year's polls.

Dozens of Lib Dem campaigners crowded around the counting tables as the ballots were counted.

The cheers could be heard throughout Manchester Central Convention Centre as Mr Leech romped home to victory after weeks pounding the pavements.

Lib Dem leader Mr Farron said: "John is one of the hardest working people I've ever known and I am absolutely thrilled that his much-needed voice is back on Manchester council.

"Where you work, you win. And nobody fought harder this year, nobody deserves to celebrate more than John Leech and his team. …
