Seven people were hospitalized after a Pittsburgh-bound flight encountered severe turbulence Thursday afternoon and had to be diverted to Florida.

Six crew members and 137 passengers were on Allegiant Air Flight 7001 from Punta Cana International Airport in the Dominican Republic to Pittsburgh International Airport. The flight was supposed to arrive in Pittsburgh at 3:45 p.m. but was diverted to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after encountering the turbulence.

The airline initially confirmed that three passengers and two flight attendants were taken to Florida hospitals, then later said two more flight attendants were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Two passengers, according to the airline, sustained head injuries, and a third suffered from complications of diabetes. …
