Athletes Face Test at Baldwin

Article excerpt

The meet is called the Baldwin Invitational, but WPIAL championship hopefuls could shrink that name down a bit.

For them, it's "Just win, baby."

Some of the area's best athletes will converge on the South Hills today for the 43rd annual Baldwin Invitational. The meet is one of the highlights of the season for Western Pennsylvania runners, jumpers and throwers, and is among the largest meets in the eastern part of the country with more than 150 boys and girls teams competing.

It also serves as a great gauge as to which athletes could be topping the medal stand when the WPIAL championships are held at the same site in two weeks. Ten athletes who won titles in individual events at last year's Baldwin Invitational went on to do the same at WPIALs.

The crowds watching the field events could be bigger than ever today. That's because Connellsville's Madison Wiltrout and Knoch's Jordan Geist will be competing. Wiltrout (javelin) and Geist (shot put), both juniors, are among the best in the country.

Wiltrout continues her comeback from surgery she had in June to repair her right (throwing) elbow. This is just her second meet of the season. She competed at the Lady Spartan Invitational April 15 at Latrobe. Her throw of 148 feet, 5 inches is by far the best in the WPIAL this spring, but still well off the 185-8 she threw last year which was the longest in U.S. high school history. Wiltrout said she is at about 80 percent.

"This is my favorite meet. I've been looking forward to this," Wiltrout said. "At Latrobe, I was able to say I'm back. Now this is me pretty much going full force."

Geist is coming off a memorable showing at the prestigious Penn Relays April 29. Geist set a meet record with a throw of 73-. It was the longest in state history.

The Baldwin Invitational is one of the most well-run events in the area. …
