Deals Nix Murder Charges in Man's Fall from Window

A Detroit man who died last year after falling from a window at a Charleston apartment complex fell while trying to climb to another apartment, prosecutors announced Friday. Four people had initially been charged with murder in the death of Bryson Ward, of Detroit. They all made deals with prosecutors this week and pleaded guilty instead to robbery charges. The murder charges were then dismissed.

On Thursday, Martez Griffin, 24, and Brian Parks, 27, pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery. The deal they made with prosecutors requires Griffin to receive a prison sentence of 60 years and Parks 50 years. Kanawha Circuit Judge Duke Bloom will sentence them May 25.

Griffin and Parks admitted Thursday that on Sept. 22, they were driven to the Vista View apartments at Renaissance Circle and went to an apartment where Ward had been staying. After a physical altercation, Griffin and Parks robbed Ward of money and heroin and then left the apartment, according to a news release from Kanawha Prosecuting Attorney Charles Miller's office. …
