Adoption Case Faces More Delays

A decision in a contentious and lengthy adoption case likely will be delayed again, court records show.

At the center of the case is a 6-year-old girl who has been in foster care since 2011. The girl's maternal aunt, Catherine Gana, 48, a native of Cameroon, and the child's foster mother, Deborah Cutrary, 61, of Penn Hills, both are seeking to adopt her.

Legal proceedings in the case began in 2014. Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Guido DeAngelis has issued a gag order in the case.

Final briefs were due Friday, but late Thursday one attorney asked for an extension.

"Counsel for [Allegheny County Children, Youth and Families] grossly underestimated the difficulty of drafting the Proposed Findings of Facts, and cross-referencing the material across the 17 transcripts that represent the most substantive portions of the record in this case, and despite counsel's diligent effort anticipates that it will be impossible for counsel to meet the current deadline of May 6, 2016," according to a request for a second extension submitted by a CYF attorney. …
