Highmark Offering Mobile Doctor's Office to Some Patients

For those who have problems getting to the doctor's office, health insurer Highmark is bringing the doctor's office to them.

Highmark took the wraps off a tractor-trailer turned into doctor's office, which will be used to bring medical care to members who have government-subsidized coverage and transportation issues. Highmark's West Virginia members will be targeted first when patients begin to be seen in the unit in June, according to Barbara Gray, senior vice president of clinical services.

"They call it primary care for a reason," Ms. Gray said at a news conference unveiling the converted truck Tuesday on the North Shore. "It's so fundamental. We want to connect with the members in a different way."

The mobile doctor's office is expected to serve about 5 percent of Highmark members who have coverage through Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid and through the Affordable Care Act. …
