NICK Powell's return to the United team should have been cause for celebration.

Unfortunately for the youngster, being asked to alter United's Champions League fortunes in his first appearance in over a year has wiped out the positives.

Louis van Gaal brought Powell on in the wrong match at the wrong time for the wrong team-mate, and the player has suffered as a result.

There is plenty for Reds to be optimistic about though.

An awful lot seems to have happened in the three years since Sir Alex Ferguson tipped the starlet to replace Paul Scholes in United's midfield.

A successful loan in a chaotic season at Wigan, a cameo in the nightmare at MK Dons, a wasted spell at Leicester and a serious injury have halted Powell's progression.

It's a shame to think that the most important goal of his career so far came three years ago, when his stunning volley opened the scoring for Crewe in their League Two play-off final at Wembley.

Yet he is younger than Jesse Lingard and Memphis Depay for instance, both of whom are still finding their feet in Van Gaal's first team as Powell works his way back in.

Fergie was not alone in seeing something in him.

Owen Coyle - who helped Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge with the transition to first-team football - predicted a 'huge career'. The Scot's successor at the DW Stadium, Uwe Rosler, also talked Powell up and spoke of the transition in the player's game in a season he was regularly asked to fill in up front. …
