POLICE were last night trying to identify the body of a woman found in the Ashton Canal.

Officers were called after the body was discovered close to The Boundary pub, in Audenshaw, at around 9.25am yesterday.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed it was a woman's body, believed to be aged in her 50s.

The death is non-suspicious and the coroner has been informed.

However, the woman has not yet been identified and officers are making enquiries to uncover her identity and trace next of kin.

It is understood the grim discovery was made in a section of the canal close to The Boundary and some industrial units.

The pub car park, on Audenshaw Road, was cordoned off with police tape. Underwater Search and Marine Unit officers were at the scene to recover the body.

GMP officers could be seen on the banks of the canal scouring the area. …
