The NHS is not of course free - we pay for it in the fairest possible way, through our taxes. And the most egregious of the many lies told about the NHS by successive governments is that it is "unsustainable", that it is failing patients and that it costs too much money.

But all the evidence points the other way. The prestigious Commonwealth Fund examines health systems in developed countries and recently ranked it number one for value for money and cost-effectiveness.

What's more, it has managed this while being underfunded compared to almost all European healthcare systems, with fewer beds and doctors per capita, and while being subject to destabilising legislation.

Currently the NHS is under attack on two fronts. Firstly, via Andrew Lansley's damaging "reforms". He imposed an expensive "market" set-up which wastes money and clinical time and benefits no-one but the private companies involved. …
