POLICE have released a CCTV image after a thief stole a doubledecker bus and took it for a joyride before crashing it into a building.

A man fell asleep on a bus and ended up inside the depot at Clarence Street, Stalybridge. But the passenger managed to get onto another empty Stagecoach bus and drove it away.

It was taken on a short drive towards Droylsden before colliding with scaffolding covering a building on Clegg Street.

The passenger then jumped off the bus and fled the scene on foot.

Greater Manchester Police have now released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the theft.

Sgt Ade Girtchen, of Tameside division, said: "Stealing a bus is a dangerous and foolish thing to do. Thankfully, no one was hurt when the bus crashed, but people could have been seriously injured. We have a clear CCTV image of a man we want to speak to and I am hoping that someone will recognise him and contact police."
