Burrell's Standout Bookends Finish on Top Again

Article excerpt

For one night, Burrell's Nikki Scherer and Lizzie Weimer went their separate ways - Scherer to the Baldwin Invitational and Weimer to the Pine-Richland Invitational.

But in what is almost always the case, they ended up in the same place - the top of the medal stand.

You would be hard pressed to find two teammates in the WPIAL more successful than these junior standouts. Scherer owns the WPIAL's fastest times this season in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. She's the defending WPIAL and PIAA Class AA champion in the 100. Weimer, meanwhile, holds the WPIAL's best marks in the discus and shot put. She's the defending WPIAL champion in both events.

"They've been the anchors of the Burrell program since they stepped in and put on those uniforms," Burrell coach Steve White said.

They compete in much different events, but share a liking of breaking records. They each hold school records: Scherer 11.6 seconds in the 100 and 24.6 in the 200; Weimer 141 feet, 7 inches in the discus and 43-7 in the shot put.

"We're not letting the paint dry on the wall because they're just going to break those records the next meet. We'll wait until the end of the season," White said.

Scherer's times rank eighth and 10th, respectively, in WPIAL history. Weimer's marks rank 11th and 15th.

Scherer won the 200 at the Baldwin Invitational and has not lost in that event this spring. She placed second in the 100. Weimer finished first in the discus and shot put at the Pine-Richland Invitational.

"He's tremendous," North Allegheny coach John Neff said. …
