ST. LOUIS COUNTY > Middle school to add sixth-grade classes * Berkeley Middle School will add sixth-grade classes beginning in the fall, in a change approved by the Ferguson-Florissant School Board on Wednesday night.

The district's other middle schools, Cross Keys and Ferguson, will continue to have only seventh and eighth grades. About 125 students in the Berkeley Middle area will be affected. Most of the students are now in fifth grade at Airport, Bermuda, Cool Valley and Holman elementary schools.

The move is an effort to improve academic performance at Berkeley Middle, which has been behind the other middle schools, Superintendent Joseph Davis said.

Staff members in support of the plan said the longer middle school experience will help instill a sense of belonging for students, which is expected to improve their relationships with teachers and their performance.

More extracurricular activities will be available to students. The additional grade will also facilitate a new block scheduling system designed to improve achievement in core academic areas.

Cross Keys and Ferguson middle schools may get sixth grade in the future, depending on the outcome of the change at Berkeley Middle. …
