Fake Lawyer Avoids Prison

A man who posed as a lawyer and bilked tens of thousands of dollars from a Moonachie business was sentenced Friday to probation.

Robert Paez, 41, of Queens, N.Y., also must reimburse the $44,000 he was paid by Beauty Plus to perform legal services to collect debts on behalf of the company.

Paez pleaded guilty Feb. 29 to one of four counts for which he was indicted.

"He saw an opportunity to try to make some more money, not really a very good way," said Christopher Perry, Paez's lawyer. Perry said Paez has no criminal history and is "terrified" of ever breaking the law again.

The married father of two made a $6,000 initial restitution payment and will have to pay $600 per month during his five years of probation. If the debt is not paid in full by May 2020, he would serve the final year of probation in the Bergen County Jail. …
