NEW YORK -- Friday marked a week since Jacoby Ellsbury suffered a right hip strain. But manager Joe Girardi wasn't sure when Ellsbury might return to the starting lineup.

Ellsbury ran Thursday and "looked better, but not to where we wanted him," Girardi said.

Ellsbury was scheduled to run before Friday's game, but the rain that canceled batting practice made Girardi unsure of his schedule. The goal is for Ellsbury to return to the starting lineup before the weekend is over. Girardi said it could be as soon as this afternoon.

"If he feels that he's ready [today] then I'll probably play him," Girardi said.

Meanwhile, CC Sabathia, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a groin strain suffered May 4, threw a bullpen session Friday, and Girardi said he looked good.
