I agree with LeadingAge PA's Ron Barth regarding abuse of Medicaid nursing home benefits ("Medicaid Loopholes for Long-Term Care Are Wrong," May 8 letters). The "eldercare" financial and legal professions have long presented this as not only acceptable, but practically a fiduciary duty for families of the elderly.

Shortly after my dad died in 1999, my mother and I scheduled a consultation with a law firm specializing in this area. In addition to presenting various money-hiding schemes aimed at qualifying for Medicaid nursing home benefits, they also encouraged me to start "charging" my mom large monthly sums for assistance rendered, so that her assets would decrease enough for her to be eligible for a benefit available to war veterans and their spouses. Accepting money that could go to truly needy veterans did not seem a fitting tribute to my dad's World War II service. …
